FFBW Honors Dr. Gianvito Martino with the 2022 Claugus Award
The Foundation For A Better World is proud to announce Gianvito Martino, M.D. of the Division of Neuroscience at the San Raffaele Institute in Milan as the recipient of the 2022 Claugus Award.
Dr. Martino received his Medical Degree in 1987 from the University of Pavia in Italy and completed his residency in Neurology in 1991. In 1990, he was a Visiting Scientist at the Department of Neurology of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and, from 1991 to 1992, he was a Research Associate at the Department of Neurology of the University of Chicago. From 2009 to 2017, he served as an Honorary Professor at Queen Mary University of London. He has been the Scientific Secretary and the President of the Italian Neuroimmunology Society (AINI). He is a full professor of Experimental Biology at the San Raffaele Vita-Salute University in Milan. He has co-authored more than 250 original articles and book chapters. His scientific interests range from the elucidation of the pathogenic mechanisms of immune-mediated central nervous system disorders to the development of gene and stem cell-based therapies for the treatment of these disorders. His numerous contributions to these fields are truly remarkable.
"It is a great honor and a great privilege to receive such an important award and it is even more important that I received it from Beatriz and Tom, two people I deeply respect and appreciate for what they do for science and scientists,” Martino said.
As part of the International Progressive MS Alliance, a global collaborative effort to accelerate the development of effective treatments for those with progressive multiple sclerosis, and in collaboration with The Foundation For A Better World, Dr. Martino and his team have worked to identify molecules that could play a protective role in neurons and/or the capacity to promote myelin repair. Multiple sclerosis attacks and destroys myelin which is the protective fatty insulation around nerve fibers of the brain and spinal cord.
Since 2018, when the FFBW committed to fund this work, Dr. Martino has shown exemplary dedication in the search for a cure for progressive MS. His commitment to research, his integrity and his humility are truly commendable and made him an excellent candidate for the 2022 Claugus Prize.
The $250,000 prize will be invested to further Dr. Martino’s work through the Universita Vita-Salute, San Raffaele.
